Lionel Rose MBE – State Funeral
Lionel Rose was a bantamweight boxer from Jacksons Track, Victoria. He was the first Indigenous Australian to win a world title when he defeated Fighting Harada in Tokyo in 1968 at just 19 years of age. The same year he was awarded an MBE and was named Australian of the Year. Helping set up the Aboriginal Youth Sport and Recreation Centre on Gertrude St, Fitzroy, people were able to show there respects by signing a book of condolences before the state funeral held at Festival Hall on 16th May 2011.
